Deep dark purple-red, with dark red hues
Black olives, black tea and dark fruits with toasted French oak
Big, full-bodied with grippy tannins.
Grown on an organic vineyard in Barmera, these grapes thrive in the hot Riverland climate. Wine writer Max Allen describes Riverland Lagrein as a square peg in a round hole - growing so well have originated in the Italian Alps.
Almost black with black tea aroma, dark fruits and spicy French oak, this mighty red is not for the faint-hearted.
Pairing Shepherd's Pie with Lagrein
A shepherd's pie is a meat-based stew baked in a crust of browned mashed potatoes and served as comfort food. Root vegetables, corn, gravy, peas, and a slew of other veggies are served alongside the Lamb.
Lagrein, an acidic red wine, is ideal for Shepherd's Pie because the fresh acidity allows each component to shine through. Everything from the carrots and peas to the corn and carrots will be apparent as you eat your way through the lamb. The gaminess of the lamb and the earthy flavours of the gravy are complemented by the earthiness of the smoke flavours of smoke, tar, leather, and spice. During this time, Lagrein's fruity flavours energise your mouth as it washes away your taste buds' excess fats from the greasy gravy.
